Sorry for the absence. Things got away from me for a little while.
A couple weeks ago, Green Day played at the Barclays Center. Been a longtime fan of theirs since they debuted right around the time I was working at VH1. And their cd American Idiot is a magnum opus- if anyone wonders what The Clash would’ve evolved into if they hadn’t imploded, that was your answer. Every listen seems like it’s 1980 again and hearing London Calling for the first time.
I actually got to speak with Billy Joe a little before the show as he was wandering around, taking everything in. He was in good spirits, even laid down on the floor and took pics of the banners hanging overhead.
The opening act was a California band called Best Coast. Honestly, I wasn’t impressed and lost interest real quick.
Then the boys took the stage and from the jump the energy was high, sparking like a loose electric wire. The fans were encouraged to crowd surf- I swear we escorted this one guy out of the pit SEVEN times! Their security manager warned us about some of Billy Joe’s hijinks- which included a waterhose-gun and toilet-papering the crowd.
This was my first time seeing them live, and beyond the music it’s a great stage show. They love what they’re doing and can’t wait to get the fans involved in the fun. They brought this one kid on stage to perform some lyrics…
Then they brought Stephanie on-stage to play with them for a little while. Baby girl did her thing, too.
And then… there was the other Stephanie. As soon as I caught on to what was gonna happen I thought, “Aw, hell no!” Even the expression on Billy Joe’s face showed some apprehension. But it was all good.
Had to be one the best shows I’d ever attended. And I got paid for it.
