Just seems like it’ll never end, doesn’t it?
Meet Emily Giffin: a fairly known author who’s enjoyed a successful writing career. Until today that is, when someone claiming to be her husband (posting as ‘a reader from ATL’) AND another person claiming to be her assistant (CrimznTider) began making their presences known on the one-star Amazon reviews of her latest book, Where We Belong. To be honest, I’m not entirely certain if these aren’t sockpuppet accounts, but the posts are there regardless.
Since many of the initial inflammatory ravings under the AvidReader review have already been deleted, here’s the blog entry by my good buddy Chibineko capturing the now-deleted posts and a link to the page of one-star reviews on Amazon where you can enjoy more of this story as it develops. Also if you’re of a mind you can check out her half-assed apologies on her FB page, after her passive/aggressive postings encouraging this terrible twosome on to greater heights (depths…?) as well as for her fans to start downvoting the negative reviews. There’s also a few key mentions on her Twitter account as well.
From her FB page, you know- just in case:
So I just walk into my husband’s office and bust him reading reviews of WHERE WE BELONG. I told him SIX years ago to stay off of Amazon. That it will only tick him off. (I have not read my reviews since Baby Proof). And sure enough, there he sits, in a lather, doing Amazon comment battle with an anonymous person. I refuse to look but you are welcome to. I feel pretty sure it’s in the comment section of a one-star review, not a five-star. 🙂
I still refuse to go on Amazon and read reviews but my close friends have told me that warfare has erupted on the WWB page… The whole thing began with some malicious comments about me–comments that seemed personal. My husband defended me. The girl deleted her comments. Now he looks bad. Last night I posted about this because I share lots and lots of things w/ you. It was not to encourage an Amazon pile-up on anyone… The bottom line and our official household stance: we absolutely encourage free speech and welcome all reviews, good or bad. His only point that he was making in defense of me is that reviews should be ABOUT the book. They should not be personal. So to the girl who changed her 5 star review to a 1 star review b/c of this whole thing (I am told), I think maybe she should consider that my work deserves to be reviewed on the merits… Similarly, I adore all my loyal readers and appreciate you defending me, but please, please don’t attack one another on this topic (or any other). Just review the book in a fair, honest way. When you go after one another, I am the one who is called a bully for sharing my thoughts in this forum. And I am far from a bully. I don’t want to have to start holding back for fear of this scenario developing again. So please, can we just be kind and respectful to one another??
Still refuse to go on Amazon, but thank you Kate… 😦
As Emily’s assistant and friend, I am so angry right now. This is the most unfair thing I have ever seen. For all those who know Emily or met her on tour, I am asking you to read this post and the comments under it and defend her against these attacks…. It is just plain wrong.
Like the man said: you can’t fix stupid.
ETA: her husband went on Amazon and posted an apology, such as it was. Here’s the text.
