A crust of bread and a corner to sleep in,
A minute to smile and an hour to weep in,
A pint of joy to a peck of trouble,
And never a laugh, but moans come double;
And that is life!- Paul Lawrence Dunbar
Can’t wait for this week to be over. Looking for a new job’s been a real pain in the ass, the Mets got swept by the fucking Houston Astros of all things and some dipshit tried to insult me on Amazon for having reviewed an erotica novel. But as stated above…
Finally finished the formats for my character profiles and worldbuilding templates, and they came out pretty damn good. What?- it ain’t bragging if it’s true!
The worldbuilder is based off of Patrica Wrede’s classic questionnaire, linked below. It’s free, so knock yourself out with it. As good as it is, there’s a few things it’s missing so I fleshed it out with author Holly Lisle’s worldbuilding ebook- which is available both via her website and Amazon. Lisle’s and Wrede’s works compliment each other beautifully, but since Lisle’s work is copyrighted I can’t share the template. But I do recommend the book. And depending upon how detailed you are I’d also suggest giving the Mythopoets Manual a glance. You just may thank me for it.
The character profile is another amalgam of resources from various places and websites- Romance Writers Association, various RPG sites, etc. Holly Lisle has another book in her catalog for creating characters, based upon Maslow’s hierarchy of needs and a few other things. Threw them all together and voila- a masterpiece. I treat the character profiles as interviews, giving me a better way of getting to know them and actually visualizing the mannerisms, hearing their voice inflections and so forth. Thankfully I haven’t had any Robert E. Howard-style episodes where he imagined Conan standing over his shoulder dictating the stories… yet.
So the weekend is shaping up to be all about brainstorming and drafting ideas. Be nice if I could squeeze in a little time to do some reviews and watch last week’s episode of Game of Thrones. Who needs sunshine and socializing?
Oh, and the Avengers movie was good as hell! Even if you’re not into comics see it tomorrow, otherwise your life will be incomplete.
